Festival Internacional Cervantino 2007

Vi and I went to Festival Internacional Cervantino 35 (2007) this weekend. The shows and events I went to were:

Sombras Chinescas (Chinesse Shadows)

Diego Rivera paintings

Espanto de la Modernidad. Fotografía del Crimen en el Archivo Casasola (Fright of Modernity: Crime photography in Casasola's Files)

El Futuro Más Acá: Cine Mexicano de Ciencia Ficción (Mexican sci-fi movies)

Diego Rivera's and the last one was among my favorites. We even took pictures with a carboard poster of El Santo.

City was very crowded -as usual in this season- but everything nice and cool.

Beer in the break!!

Sat, Sep 8, 2007

I'm going to MBA* classes on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Yesterday I had Strategic Planning class. During the break, at 7:40 PM ET, the university's cafeteria was closed, so Mar a female classmate and friend decided to go to an Extra(a convenience store, kind of 7eleven) .

—go for a beer? —said Mar.

—a beer? Fantastic! —said I.

We invited F, a friend of us and we three went to the Extra, which is across the street from the school. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to go in my car. So we did. When I was pulling over, I saw all the class inside the Extra.

—Hey guys! look everybody is inside, let's look for another shop.

My partners in crime agreed. So I took them to the neighborhood next to the school. There we found a shop and got our alcoholic beverages. Mar and Fer got a Caribe Cooler and I a canned Modelo. Then we hopped into the car and pulled over near the school, toasted and drank.

Mar relieved the stress from "not going out for two weeks". Well, everyone got stressed for different reasons. F was nervous and worried because his wife is going to give birth his second child soon and some jobs of expansion on their house are delayed. I was not stressed but I think it was a good moment to toast for friendship.

—Cheers! —I said to my friends and classmates raising my can of Modelo. Three bottles and souls hit each other.

After finishing our furtive drinking, we got back to the class with renewed energy and soul. So we could stood up for the class.

La Finca Chronicles (Vol. I)

I have recently developed such a fondness for a bar in the City where I live. Its name is La Finca. I think La Finca is that place which exists —or should exist, at least— in every town or city, where guys and gals can stop by once in a while to have some drinks, specially a beer, listen to a local rock band and chat about simple things of life.

La Finca is a house turned into a bar. It has only one big hall, which has a bar in the middle, surrounded by tables and chairs, in a country style. In front of this table court area, and at the left of the entrance is a space for the band in turn.

First time I was there was on Aug 17th 2007 —more than a week ago from the day I'm writing this lines—, with Miguel, a new co-worker who has became a new friend. It was a Friday night, the band was playing Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water. The hard rock riffs flooded the ambient mixing up with toasting striking bottles and distant chit chats.

Whenever the band finished performing a song, people gave only a few shy claps and a lot of mentadas de madre —fuck you's—. A particularly funny situation was when the band came back from a break, vocalist said "Well, we're going to continue, thank you very much". When they saw there wasn't any reaction from the crowd, the front man said "Well, an applause..., or at least a mentadilla (a little fuck you)". People responded very lively and enthusiastic to this last request.

I don't know the name of the band, but the songs they played included:

Paranoid, Born To Be Wild, Weird, La Grange, Purple Haze, De Musica Ligera (of light music), Beber de tu Sangre (to drink from your blood), Triste Cancion (sand song), and ADO.

We were introduced there to a couple of preppy girls: Cristina and Rocio. Rocio had lived in Spain for several years and had recently came back to Mexico. Her friend Cristina was keeping her up with the night live in the City. I told her she had traces of Spaniard accent. That was all I talked to her, before they leave.

Drank four beers and had some snacks.

007's Top 7 in 2007

I want to do a Film Fest in house. It's going to be about, the James Bond's top 7 movies. Watch one per weekend, during seven weekends.

The top seven 007 movies in my opinion are (in chronological order):

  • From Russia With Love
  • Goldfinger
  • The Spy Who Loved Me
  • For Your Eyes Only
  • License To Kill
  • Tomorrow Never Dies
  • The World Is Not Enough

Honorific mention:

Thunderball,  Live and Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun

I'm not pretty sure about the last one....

11 days in Mty

Here I am, back in town, after eleven days in Monterrey. I went because of my job. Trip was ok, we went by car, and return on a plane. Went to McAllen, Tx, which is only 2 hours from Mty.

Well , that's all for now.
